Water Protection

A few days after Morning Star was founded (August 1992), we heard that the forest surrounding our 160-acre piece of land was slated for logging and road-building. And so we went to the first of many watershed meetings.  As a community, we began to spend literally hundreds of hours educating ourselves on the issue, writing letters, sending out petitions, writing reports, and seeking proactive solutions. And thus we became engaged in co-creating a healthy greater community and bioregion.

Water still flows clear and pure down the mountain side – we are blessed in that we can kneel down and drink straight from the creeks on the land. But road-building and logging can easily disrupt this fragile ecosystem. However, as we work to protect the water and forest, we are also continuously inspired and energized by this gift of water and the beauty around us.

The fact that the valley we live in faces the possible logging of its forested slopes and watersheds serves as a daily reminder that we are running out of time to make crucial decisions about how we treat the environment and wilderness we are sustained and nurtured by.
